Executive Summary
Case for Support A Prospectus for Collective Impact and Sustainable Change Collective Power for Healthier School Meals:
The Urban School Food Alliance (The Alliance) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2012 by school nutrition leaders from the nation’s largest urban districts. Our mission is to leverage the collective voice, expertise, and purchasing power of major urban school food programs to deliver high-quality, nutritious meals that support student health, learning, and lifelong success . We believe every child deserves access to meals that nourish both body and mind, and that true transformation happens when districts work together. Today, The Alliance unites 19 major urban school districts serving 3.8 million students across 6,889 schools and delivering 657 million meals annually, backed by a combined purchasing power of $1.35 billion . Through shared procurement standards, best-practice toolkits, policy advocacy, and innovative pilots such as Boost the Roost (our successful No Antibiotic Ever chicken initiative), we are raising the bar on what school meals can and should be. Supporting The Alliance means investing in far more than one organization. By aligning these large, influential districts, we create market demand and practical solutions that ripple far beyond our membership. When The Alliance members unite behind higher standards, like NAE chicken or increased local procurement, we shift supply chains, lower costs, and increase availability of healthier options for districts of every size nationwide. Our collective action serves as a catalyst for sustainable, scalable change that benefits millions of additional students in smaller and rural districts who lack the same resources or influence. We invite funders and partners who share our commitment to child nutrition, education equity, and systems-level impact to join us. Your support will strengthen this growing collective, accelerate innovation in school food, and help ensure that high-quality meals drive better health and academic outcomes for students in urban communities, and set a new standard for the entire country.

Collective Power for Healthier School Meals: Case for Support
Through initiatives like Boost the Roost, shared best practices, and strong policy advocacy, we are raising the quality of school meals while keeping them affordable and accessible. Our members know that when we stand together, we can make nutritious food the norm rather than the exception—for urban students today and for children everywhere tomorrow. I am deeply grateful for the dedicated team and passionate district leaders who bring this work to life every day. Their hard work and commitment remind me daily why this mission matters so much. Together, we remain tenacious in our fight for better school nutrition because we have seen firsthand how a good meal can brighten a child’s day and support their success in the classroom. If you share our belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow with the support of healthy food, I invite you to join us. Your partnership will strengthen this growing collective and help us continue building sustainable change that reaches far beyond our member districts. Thank you for considering the Urban School Food Alliance. I look forward to the possibility of working together to nourish brighter futures for all our children.

Dear Friends and Partners,
I have spent my entire career fighting for every child to have access to the healthy, nourishing school meals they deserve. What began as a simple belief—that good food helps children learn, grow, and thrive—has led me to this remarkable organization where that belief becomes reality at scale. The Urban School Food Alliance exists because school nutrition leaders from the nation’s largest urban districts chose to come together. Instead of working in isolation, we combined our voices, our expertise, and our substantial purchasing power to create real, lasting change. This collective approach is powerful: when 19 major urban districts align on higher standards, we don’t just improve meals for the 3.8 million students we serve across 6,889 schools. We help shift supply chains and open doors for healthier options in districts of every size, all across the country.
With gratitude,

The Urban School Food Alliance (The Alliance) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2012 by school nutrition professionals from the nation’s largest urban districts (50,000 students enrolled or more). What began with six founding members—New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami-Dade, Dallas, and Orange County (Orlando)—has grown into a powerful coalition of 19 major urban school districts serving 3.8 million students across 6,889 schools. Unlike buying groups, The Alliance does not purchase food or supplies on behalf of its members. Instead, we unite district leaders to share expertise, develop shared standards and best practices, advocate for supportive policies, and harness our collective voice and purchasing power of $1.35 billion to drive meaningful change. This collaborative model allows us to improve food quality, increase access to nutritious meals, advance sustainability efforts, and lower costs—all while maintaining each district’s independence. For more than a decade, our members have worked together to change the landscape of child nutrition. Their achievements include helping school districts adopt an antibiotic-free
standard for poultry—even before many of the nation’s leading restaurants—and removing millions of polystyrene trays and plastic cutlery from landfills every year by implementing sustainable practices. The Alliance has advanced local sourcing efforts by hosting webinars for producers across the country and delivering basic training on local value-based procurement to hundreds of producers and school district professionals. Additionally, our website offers accessible buying-local resources, enabling member districts to source locally more frequently while sharing effective best practices. The Alliance leverages this expertise and experience to share evidence-informed practices, make high-quality ingredients available and affordable, and advocate for policies that support school meal programs and the students they serve. Many of the children in our districts come from families facing food insecurity and qualify for free or reduced- price meals. By working together, we are able to raise the bar on what school meals can be—healthier, more sustainable, and more delicious—while creating ripple effects that benefit districts of all sizes nationwide.

Our Work: Influence Support Build
Advancing Our Mission Progress Under Our Three Strategic Goals
At the Urban School Food Alliance, everything we do is guided by three interconnected strategic goals: Influence, Support, and Build . These goals reflect our belief that real, sustainable change in school nutrition requires strong public voice, excellent member collaboration, and a resilient organization capable of long-term impact. → Influence — We position The Alliance as the leading public voice for the unique school meal needs of urban districts. We build broader understanding and education about the value of school nutrition and showcase the innovative practices that deliver healthy, appealing meals to urban students every day. → Support — We enhance member benefits and engagement by serving as a convener and facilitator of best-practice sharing and continuous learning among our 19 districts. → Build — We strengthen organizational capacity by creating meaningful opportunities for board, staff, and member engagement while securing the sustainable funding needed to achieve our ambitious goals.
Together, these three pillars allow us to leverage our collective power far beyond what any single district could accomplish alone. In 2026, with 19 member districts serving 3.8 million students across 6,889 schools and delivering 657 million meals annually (backed by $1.35 billion in combined purchasing power), we continued to drive measurable progress on all fronts. Our work improves meals for millions of urban students—many of whom qualify for free or reduced-price meals—while creating ripple effects that benefit school districts of every size nationwide. When we raise standards together (for example, through our Boost the Roost No Antibiotic Ever chicken pilot), we shift supply chains, lower costs over time, increase access to healthier options, and demonstrate scalable solutions for the entire country. The following pages highlight key successes, ongoing initiatives, and future opportunities under each goal. By investing in The Alliance, funders become essential partners in this collective effort—helping us amplify urban voices, equip district leaders, and build a stronger foundation for healthier school meals everywhere.

This educational opportunity was created for and geared toward the equipment managers in our member districts. This training focused on the concept that the right equipment can produce better food, provide safer work conditions, save time, and increase participation in K12 with food that looks, smells, and tastes fabulous. We are looking to expand this program in 2026 and beyond to include more specialty training opportunities for the many roles that exist within school foodservice.
